In April of 1984 Robert Hill of South Africa and Günter Gräwe of Germany
decided to establish a joint venture in South Africa to distribute cutlery and tableware.
Gunhill Cutlers and Silversmiths (Pty) Ltd was formed and began trading in September 1984. In 1986 after the dramatic weakening of the South African Rand, Robert Hill decided to
start local manufacturing of top quality silver-plated and gold-plated cutlery. A deal was struck with an English Manufacturer "Francis Greaves and Sons of
Sheffield" and Gunhill Cutlers and Silversmiths began local production under this name.
Apart from the traditional English designs, Gunhill Cutlers and Silversmiths also produces many other
designer patterns under the name "Gräwe and Hill - cutlers and silversmiths". In addition to Epns (Electroplated nickel silver) cutlery, Gunhill Cutlers and Silversmiths manufactures
an extensive range of 18/10 stainless steel cutlery, suitable for upmarket catering
establishments and fine homes. The most popular patterns comprise of the twelve main table
items and in excess of forty serving and accessory items.
Gunhill Cutlers and Silversmiths has its own woodworking
division which produces hand crafted cutlery cabinets in which to store
and protect the cutlery. In addition other items include Grãwe & Hill
Salt & Pepper mills.
Gunhill Cutlers and Silversmiths' customer list includes many of South
Africa's leading specialist silverware gift shops and departmental stores. In addition some of
the countries finest hotels, country houses and game lodges, as well as South African Airways
first class and famous Blue Train.
